A new WNBA rebounding threshold
Angel Reese became the first player in WNBA history to collect 500 rebounds in a single season during the Atlanta Dream's game against the Chicago Sky on September 19. The Atlanta forward reached the milestone in the first half, extending a campaign in which she had already rewritten the league's rebounding record.
Reese had broken the previous single-season mark on August 24 in Atlanta's 78-71 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. Reaching 500 created a new round-number benchmark beyond that record and reinforced her status as the league's dominant rebounder in 2026.
The achievement came during Reese's third All-Star season. Entering Saturday's game, the 24-year-old was averaging a career-high 16.5 points and a league-leading 12.4 rebounds across 40 appearances. She was also contributing 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 0.7 blocks per game, production that reflected an impact extending beyond work around the basket.
Her season had already included another WNBA record. Reese registered her 29th double-double on August 30, the highest single-season total in league history. The combination of scoring and rebounding consistency made double-doubles a recurring part of Atlanta's campaign rather than an occasional peak.
Reese has characterized rebounding as a product of an assertive approach to every missed shot. After surpassing the earlier season record in August, she said her goal was to rank among the best by the end of her career and emphasized the importance of bringing the same effort each night.
Central role in Atlanta's playoff push
The milestone also arrived with Atlanta preparing for the postseason. The Dream entered the game with a 27-14 record and held fourth place in the league standings. Reese had become a central frontcourt presence for that run and was approaching her first playoff appearance.
The team's performance data underscored her influence. Atlanta posted a plus-10.2 net rating with Reese on the court, compared with plus-0.2 when she was off it, according to figures cited from WNBA.com. Net rating measures the difference between points scored and allowed per 100 possessions, so the gap suggests the Dream had performed substantially better during her minutes. It does not isolate one player's contribution, but it provides context for her role in successful lineups.
Rebounding totals can reflect minutes, pace and missed-shot opportunities as well as individual skill. Reese nevertheless separated herself from every previous WNBA player by becoming the first to reach 500, while also leading the league on a per-game basis. That combination of volume and rate makes the record more than a product of the schedule alone.
With the playoffs nearing, the Dream could now pair Reese's individual landmarks with a chance to convert a strong regular season into a postseason run. Whatever follows, her 2026 campaign has already established statistical marks future rebounders will have to chase.
