The WTA Finals will move to Charlotte, North Carolina, for three seasons beginning in 2027, giving the women’s professional tennis tour a new home for its year-end championship after the 2026 tournament.

The Women’s Tennis Association said Charlotte will host the competition from 2027 through 2029 at Spectrum Center, the downtown arena used by the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets. The Finals bring together the eight leading singles players and doubles teams from the season, making the event one of the tour’s most prominent annual showcases.

The agreement extends beyond the tournament. The WTA also plans to transfer its global headquarters from St. Petersburg, Florida, to Charlotte. The announcement did not specify when that office move will take place. Together, the two decisions establish Charlotte as both an operating base for the tour and the temporary home of its principal season-ending event.

Charlotte’s first edition will follow a transitional 2026 tournament at Indian Wells in California. That event had originally been due to take place in Riyadh, where the Finals had been staged since 2024. The tour moved the 2026 competition amid disruption to sporting schedules in the Middle East during the US-led war on Iran.

The choice of Spectrum Center puts the tournament in a large established indoor venue rather than a purpose-built tennis complex. Organizers will need to convert the arena for competition, training and player services while accommodating the format’s concentrated schedule. The central location also connects the event to Charlotte’s existing hotel and transport network.

For the WTA, committing to a three-year run provides more continuity than moving the Finals annually. A stable venue can support advance ticket sales, sponsorship planning and local promotion, while giving players and broadcasters a predictable setting. The headquarters relocation makes the city’s role more substantial than that of a host market alone.

The shift also changes the tour’s recent geographic pattern. Riyadh hosted the championship from 2024, and Indian Wells will serve as the one-year bridge in 2026. Charlotte will therefore become the third host location in a four-year span before providing the event with three consecutive seasons in one market.

The agreement is limited to the 2027, 2028 and 2029 seasons, so it does not establish a permanent site beyond that period. Nor did the announcement provide financial terms or a detailed timetable for moving WTA staff from Florida. Those questions remain separate from the confirmed tournament schedule.

The relocation adds another major sports property to Charlotte’s calendar and places the WTA’s administrative center near the venue that will host its top performers. The immediate task for the tour is completing the 2026 edition at Indian Wells before beginning the three-year Charlotte arrangement.
